Letter from the Editor

Maren "Nasty" Calderon, unedited.

Six years ago she quit a glossy magazine desk to launch a platform for the women the glossies kept filing down. Today 18 & Nasty Girls reads 2.4 million of them a month, across 22 countries — and the inbox still doesn't sleep.

The Body Autonomy Manifesto.

Read it. Sign it. Wear it.

We were raised inside a culture that monetized our bodies and then shamed us for the invoice. We are no longer accepting either side of that deal. We write this not as a brand, but as a body — collective, loud, ungovernable. The following articles are non-negotiable. The signatories below are not a trend.

  1. I. A woman's body is her first publication. She is the author, the editor, the art director, and the only person with final approval.
  2. II. Our beauty standard is whichever one lets us walk into a room and forget we were supposed to shrink.
  3. III. We do not owe prettiness, thinness, smoothness, or silence. We do not owe a smile to make a stranger comfortable.
  4. IV. Tattoos, piercings, stretch marks, scars, body hair, and chosen weight are not warnings. They are footnotes in a book we already finished writing.
  5. V. No editor, brand, partner, or algorithm has voting rights on what we publish, photograph, or wear. We surface opportunities. We do not accept instructions.
  6. VI. We will credit our contributors by name, byline, and rate — publicly, every time, no exceptions.
  7. VII. We refuse the before/after. The only before/after we honor is the one between who you were told to be and who you decided to be instead.

Signed,

Maren "Nasty" Calderon

Chapters

Six years, one masthead.

From a one-bedroom apartment in East Austin to a sold-out summit in Brooklyn. The receipts, in order.

  1. 2019

    Born in Austin.

Former V Magazine editor Maren Calderon files the LLC on a kitchen table, ships the first issue from a Printful warehouse, and publishes an interview with a Brooklyn tattooist that gets reblogged 84,000 times in a weekend. Founders' Day is now celebrated every October.

  2. 2021

The first masthead grows a mast.

Twelve full-time editors, eighty-four freelance contributors across nine countries. The Nasty Dispatch newsletter crosses 50,000 subscribers. The masthead graphic lands on a tote bag that ends up in three Vogue features and one regrettable TikTok.

  3. 2023

    NastyCon sells out. Forbes calls.

The inaugural NastyCon summit in Brooklyn hits its 600-cap two weeks early. Independent Media Awards names us Best Niche Publication. Maren lands the Forbes 30 Under 30 Media list. The Body Autonomy Manifesto is ratified by 23 collectives in its first month.

  4. 2025

412 creators. 22 countries. One inbox.

The verified creator directory now services 89,000+ monthly brand searches. The Dispatch reaches 184,000 inboxes with a 42% open rate. Creator-brand partnership revenue clears $3.8M for the year. The second Independent Media Award hangs on the same hook.
